Submissions for the HIA GreenSmart Professional award need to address the judging criteria. The following questions are provided as a guide to assist applicants in preparing sufficient information to support the entry. A written submission, supported by photos, plans, brochures, and other useful information, should be provided to allow the judges to understand the entrant’s views, knowledge, experience and passion for sustainable residential building.

1. Approach to sustainable residential design, building or professional service (40 points)

1.1 Outline your individual philosophy on environmentally responsible building and how this has influenced the direction of your business

Consider:

What environmental features are of most importance to you and why?

What environmental features have you been incorporating into your housing projects and why?

1.2 Demonstrate how you create and promote improved outcomes for sustainable housing

Consider:

Have you created or lead change in the housing industry?

Have you worked with like-minded builders, designers, contractors, product manufacturers and suppliers, customers, apprentices, service providers to achieve sustainable outcomes in residential building?

Have you worked with customers to achieve an improved environmental outcome for their project?

How do you measure your success in promoting change?

1.3 Demonstrate how you are expanding your knowledge and keeping up-to-date with changing trends

Consider:

Where do you obtain your knowledge from? Web, product manufacturers, further training.

Do you install new products in your housing projects and review their proposed benefits?

2.  Application of HIA GreenSmart Principles (20 points)

2.1 Provide current evidence of building the HIA GreenSmart way or providing a service that incorporates HIA GreenSmart principles in the residential building industry

Consider:

What HIA GreenSmart principles have you applied in a recent housing project and why?

Do you seek to incorporate HIA GreenSmart management practices in all projects? If not, what are the constraints?

What innovative projects have you been involved with? How do you try to learn from these projects?

3. Incorporation of sustainable practices into your business (10 points)

3.1  Outline how environmental issues have been incorporated by you into the planning and decision making processes for your business operations

Consider:

Have you introduced systems into the business operations to improve its environmental performance?

e.g. Consideration in your estimating and/ or purchasing system for your business operations where decisions are based on environmental features?

4. Innovation and Promotion (30 points)

4.1  Outline how you communicate your business philosophy to customers

Consider:

Do you promote yourself as a HIA GreenSmart Professional in marketing material?

Have you developed any public presentations, publications, or website information?

Do you promote your business as providing a point of differentiation from others?

4.2  List the principles, practices or products that you see yourself using in the future to build the HIA GreenSmart way and why.

Consider:

What is a product, technique, system or service that you see yourself using/ incorporating in the next 12 months? Why?

Are you planning to grow your business with respect to promoting environmentally responsible housing? If so what is the focus?

5.  How do you see the housing industry continuing to adapt to a changing environment?

Consider:

Do you believe there will continue to be changes in the way we build houses in the next two years and what could this include? e.g. house size, material use, choice of material based on life cycle assessment and construction methods, carbon offsetting of house construction, adaptable, modular or smart housing.
